Landslide Danger Alert

Authorities said heavy downpours on Tuesday afternoon triggered a landslide in Jou de Los Boches, in Cabrales, Oviedo. This is a region of mountainous terrain that is popular with hikers. It borders the Parque Nacional Los Picos de Europa.

Six people who were members of an excursion organized by a scouting organization in Madrid got caught up in the landslide and had to be airlifted after sustaining various injuries. Five of them are children aged between 11 and 12, while the sixth victim is a monitor accompanying the group.

Emergency services received a call about the tragedy at around 4:26 p.m. (local time). Low lying fog made the rescue operation more difficult, because it was not immediately clear exactly where the victims were. The help of emergency services in Cantabria and Castilla y Leon was also requested. Finally, shortly before 6:00 p.m., the group was located by a team from Asturias, and a chopper from Castilla y Leon assisted in lifting out the injured.
