Explosion Alert

Streets are closed in downtown Long Beach and electricity is out after an underground vault explosion blew off a manhole cover at about 4:45 p.m. Thursday, initially leaving 30,000 homes and businesses without power.

The number of affected customers was dropped to 7,500, then to 1,000 by 8 p.m., Mayor Robert Garcia said at a late press conference near the site of the explosion and fire, 10 Street and Locust Avenue.

This is the third time this month power outages have affected downtown Long Beach.

Garcia has tweeted several times that he finds the situation “UNACCEPTABLE.”
