Seeds of small fish and shrimp are found dead along the Kreung (river) Bubon, District Sama Tiga, Aceh Barat. Allegedly it happened as a result of contaminated waste oil palm.
Lutan (55 years), community leaders Bubon in Meulaboh, on Friday (24/7), said the death of fish and shrimp seed known to residents this week, as the waste of oil palm plantations belonging to one company dumped into the river.
“This condition is very severe because the waste oil usually is not too killed when the condition of the river water is high, but in the dry season like this water dried fish and shrimp then all dead,” said Lutan as quoted by Antara.
Lutan explained, ranging from the Village Area (village) Suak Rank to Lhok Bubon, District Sama Tiga, with a total of about 23 villages affected by the disposal of waste oil palm plantation company PT Karya Tanah Subur (KTS) Astra Agro Lestari Tbk.
In addition to turning off the river biota the source of livelihood of local communities, waste from the processing of crude palm oil is feared could damage the health of people who consume river water.
“There are some people who consume water from the river, in fact almost all places of worship mosques also uses water from the River Bubon. So if allowed not only fish and shrimp died but also human,” said Lutan.
Communities directly impacted by environmental pollution it plans to come to the West Aceh district legislature, in order to find solutions so that environmental damage was not widespread and protracted.
The regional government asked to find a solution. Residents offered to place the company’s palm oil processing was moved to a location away from the watershed (DAS), so that environmental damage can be reduced.
“First of all, we ask the factory was kept away from the river, that is still close to my taste will not be dealt with. We have had 23 affected villages here to the river Kuala Bubon,” added Lutan.
