Lebanon is expected to be hit with a sustained heat wave, according to a source at the Rafik Hariri International Airport’s Meteorological Department. The hot summer weather will reach its peak Sunday, according to a morning weather bulletin released by the department.
The eastern basin of the Mediterranean will “be gradually affected, starting Saturday night, with a typical annual heat wave,” the statement read. The steamy weather will continue through mid-next week.
The source told The Daily Star that in past years Lebanon has faced similar rises in temperatures, often in excess of what is expected this weekend, so residents need not make a fuss.
According to the bulletin, the weekend will see partly cloudy skies with high humidity along the coast.
Saturday’s temperatures will range from 21 to 33 degrees along the coast, 19 to 29 in the mountains, 14 to 26 in the Cedars and 18 to 37 in the Bekaa Valley.
But temperatures will rise Sunday, reaching 23 to 37 degrees along the coast, 20 to 33 in the mountains, 15 to 29 in the Cedars and 19 to 41 in the Bekaa Valley.
“When temperatures go above their seasonal levels, we consider it a heat wave,” the source said.
The seasonal average during this period is 31 to 32 on the coast, 27 to 28 in the mountains, 24 to 25 in the Cedars and 35 to 36 in the Bekaa Valley, according to the department.
“Temperatures will start to decrease on Wednesday, but on the coast people will continue to feel the heat due to the humidity,” the source said.
He warned people should expect even higher temperatures as the month continues.
