Wildfire Forces Some 700 Jerusalem Suburb Residents to Evacuate

The Jerusalem suburb of Even Sapir was evacuated on Sunday morning, as a wildfire snaked through the rural town. Temperatures in the area were unseasonably high, threatening to top 100 degrees.

Ten firefighting teams, including four planes, were dispatched to the area and to neighboring Ein Karem.

As a result of the fire, Route 1, the main Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, has been closed to traffic eastbound from Latrun to Jerusalem. Vehicles are encouraged to travel on Route 443 instead.
Just over a week ago, a large fire near the nearby city of Beit Shemesh destroyed some 1,500 dunam (370 acres) of natural forest.

According to the fire department, the blaze required the greatest firefighter mobilization since the 2010 Carmel Forest disaster – 13 fire-fighting planes and more than 70 ground crews.
