New Deadly Ebola Cases In Guinea, Africa

Ebola Virus

The World Health Organization confirmed two more patients in Guinea, one in Conakry and another in Forecariah, to be positive of Ebola. This is a huge blow as authorities have been trying hard to maintain an Ebola-free Africa after its two-year rampage.

Liberia was declared Ebola-free last Sept. 3. Meanwhile Sierra Leone has been counting down at 22 days of 42 to be declared free of transmission.

“We suspect that he contracted the disease by another means, perhaps sexual, but we cannot be sure for the time being,” said Fode Tass Sylla.

Ebola medical toolkits, which were successfully being used these past few months, are temporarily available but the studies will be ending this mid-November putting a big question mark if the authorities will still use the vaccine.

Researchers are learning more about the Ebola virus as time goes by including its potency to thrive in a male’s semen for nine months after the first initial infection showed. This is interestingly and significantly longer than what they first thought.

Information needed for the authorities to stop Ebola was inadequate when the initial results came out as researchers were not sure whether the traces of virus found was still virulent.

“These results come at a critically important time, reminding us that while Ebola case numbers continue to plummet, Ebola survivors and their families continue to struggle with the effects of the disease,” stated Ebola expert Bruce Aylward from WHO.

Aylward further said that after their discovery, 17,000 Ebola survivors will be needing “continued, substantial support for the next six to 12 months to meet these challenges and to ensure their partners are not exposed to potential virus”.

The Ebola virus affected more than 28,000 people in West Africa last year and more than 11,000 of them were killed.

“This confirms that Ebola virus can persist in the genital tract for a considerable length of time, months after the virus has disappeared from the blood, and worryingly shows that this long-lived reservoir is a potential source of new infections,” Ball said in an emailed comment.

So far, the authorities are still tracking the two infected patients.
