Maldives main international airport witnessed a major power outage Saturday evening but electricity was restored in about half an hour.

An official from the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which runs the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) told Haveeru the power outage affected the departure terminal the most. Power was also out from parts of the arrival terminal and duty free shops at the arrival hall, he added.

“It was caused because a sudden malfunction in an engine. The issue has been fixed and electricity restored,” the official from the state-owned company said.

Along with INIA, the Maldives has just one other international airport; the Gan International Airport in the southernmost city of Addu. However, no international flights operate to and from the airport at present.

INIA, located on the island of Hulhule and accessible from capital Male via regular ferry service in about 10 minutes, plays an important part in the Maldives’ economy which relies heavily on its world-renowned, upmarket tourism.
