War-torn Yemen was braced last night for one of the worst storms ever recorded in the area, with seven years’ worth of normal rainfall expected to fall and winds likely to reach 105mph.

The category 4 tropical cyclone, named Chapala, was expected to make landfall close to the city of Mukalla, a southern seaport with a population of 300,000, bringing with it a seven-metre tidal surge.
