Severe heatwave causes extreme water shortages in parts of South Africa

Heatwave Alert

Parts of Germiston in Gauteng ran out of water on Tuesday as the heatwave and drought in the area combined to put the water supply under severe strain.

The City of Johannesburg earlier this week enforced level two water restrictions in a bid to ease the pressure on the city’s water supply.

The Ekurhuleni metro municipality was unable to say when the water supply would be restored to the affected areas in Germiston but it has sent in water tankers to some of the affected areas.

The municipality said that residents could fetch water from the tankers at Howe Circle, Van Buuren Road in Bedfordview and Essexworld.

Officials have blamed increased consumption and the heatwave on the water shortage and warned that water levels in surrounding areas were also diminishing.
