Researchers collected 293 dead animals on the beaches of Santos, last weekend. The suspicion is that the cold front passing through the region has contributed to the number, considered by veterinarians and biologists atypical for this time of year. Among redemptions are seabirds, porpoises and even a sea wolf.
They nearly 50 kilometers from shore between San Vicente and Bertioga are the most gatherings: 160. According to the veterinarian Andrea Maranho, the gremar Institute, the balance concentrates two species typical of shore birds, the tern and silly-little. In some cases, they have been found in an advanced state of decomposition.
“We are in an atypical year. The number of dead animals is equivalent to the winter and we’re almost in the summer,” said the doctor, remembering also the influence of the El Niño weather phenomenon that warms the Pacific Ocean waters and causes more storms in the Atlantic. The intense cold front passing through the coast of São Paulo’s example.
Also according to the doctor, most of these animals can not get through the rough seas or resist wind gusts and therefore end up dying and being brought to shore by the force of the tide. “Those who survive end up coming to the beach quite weak, often sick, requiring special attention and care,” says Andrea.
An example is the marine wolf that was found in Bertioga edge. She was rushed to the gremar the rehabilitation center to treat an infection and pneumonia. The expectation is that the animal will recover at least 20 days before it can be released and then returned to the sea.
Seabirds such as penguins known, and the other less popular species were also rescued and undergo treatment. The fear of veterinarians is that they do not survive despite treatment, as they reached the shore quite weak.
