A total of 230 marine animals, including sea lions and dolphins were found dead on the coast of Lambayeque in the last 20 days, said the head of Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) in this region, Jaime de la Cruz. He said that specimens were dying or decaying.

He said the mammals were found during several trips from the beach district of Sea Chérrepe to Mórrope. He said they will analyze samples from the animals to determine the real causes of mass death.

However, he said that the deaths, especially of sea lions, “should indirectly El Niño” and looking fish in the sea to feed, because these are scarce in the Lobos Island Earth, where they live. “80% of dead species are sea lions, which have had to migrate to deeper cold waters for fish. Find their food in the nets of fishermen, but then get caught and drown in the ocean, “he said.

In that sense, he warned that in the coming months more animals will die by the warming waters due to climate event.

The leader of the Unified Federation of Fishermen in northern Peru, Hector Galan, meanwhile, estimated that some 800 species have been found dead this 2015, on the beaches of Lambayeque .
