Disruption of the Fundão dam in Mariana (MG), divided one of the major sources of the country into two parts. One of them, former Rio Doce, guarded an incalculable number of fish and amphibians. The other, who advanced on the first in a wave of mud, left in its wake a mixture of mud and water without apparent life and profound environmental, social and economic impact.
If the Holy Spirit of some species catches were also made to try to preserve them in the first 300 kilometers of the watercourse, in Minas Gerais, there was not enough time or capacity to rescue animals from certain death. The loss was total. As a result of the destruction caused by lack of oxygen accumulated on the banks or were swept downstream in a scene that shocked the riverside population.
– It is certainly the biggest extermination of fish recorded in Latin America – supports the ecologist and professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais Ricardo Pinto Coelho.
There is no way to be sure, today, the number of animals killed by mud avalanche. Taking into account the biodiversity of the Rio Doce, it is possible that at least 71 native species of fish have been wiped from the stream – of which 11 were already threatened with extinction. Added to the exotic, they are about a hundred species affected.
How spawning season, fishermen receive allowance
Several people in an act of desperation and sorry for the animals that were shooting out of the water because of suffocation, still tried to rescue some specimens. The fisherwoman Advisor Pena (MG) Maria Amelia de Farias, 47, went into shock at the sight of thousands of fish dead or dying dragged by the current – one of the main symbols of environmental disaster Mariana. He took a curimba (type of fish) in his arms and did not contain a convulsive weeping.
– I tried to control myself, but I could not. I saw the animals fighting to live in the midst of mud and burst into tears – Account.
Maria Amelia took in hand a handful of others still alive copies and placed them in a kind of natural pool formed between some rocks on the riverbank. On Friday, the Rio Doce level rose and flooded the makeshift nursery with its orange and sterile water.
