Air traffic alert issued due to ash explosions from Kanlaon Volcano, Philippines

Volcano Alert

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded two ash explosions coming from Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Oriental on Saturday.

Resident volcanologist Jay Jamelo said the first ash eruption was recorded at 11:40 a.m. while the second one ocurred at 1 p.m.

The explosions produced 200-meter high steam and ash columns from the crater.

Jamelo said Phivolcs asked the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to advise airplanes to avoid the area.

CAAP said the notice to airmen (NOTAM) will last until 1:14 p.m. on Sunday, December 13.

”Flights operating in the vicinity of the volcano are advised to avoid flying near the summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft with vertical height from surface until 10,000 ft above sea level,” CAAP said.

Alert level one is maintained over Kanlaon. This means no one should be within the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone of the volcano.

Phivolcs raised alert level 1 over Kanlaon in November due to a steam explosion.
