
Tropical Cyclone Nona (international name Melor) intensified into a severe tropical storm Sunday morning, as Public Storm Warning Signal 1 was raised over the Samar provinces, weather service PAGASA said in a morning bulletin.
At 4 a.m., Nona was 605 kms east of Borongan, Eastern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph, and gusts of up to 120 kph. Estimated rainfall amount within the storm’s 100 km diameter was from moderate to heavy.
Nona was moving west-northwest at 19 kph, with PAGASA expecting to also raise Signal 1 over the Bicol Region later in the morning.
