Major winter storms expected to hammer east Idaho, USA this week starting tonight

Winter Storm Warning_2

The National Weather Service says eastern Idaho is in for its worst week of winter weather thus far this season—just in time for Christmas.

Multiple snowstorms are expected to barrel through the region and the weather service has already issued multiple winter storm alerts warning the public about the deteriorating conditions.

It sounds as though eastern Idaho will have a very white Christmas—similar to last year when a major winter storm hit the region on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

This week will likely be even worse because of the multiple storms expected, bringing fresh snow to the region possibly every day this week through Christmas Day. The worst storm so far is expected to hit Monday afternoon.

However, a weaker system is forecast to hammer parts of the region starting Sunday night and the weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for the Island Park, Driggs, Victor, St. Anthony and Ashton areas calling for up to five inches of fresh snow from this storm. The snow is expected to start falling around 8 p.m. Sunday and continue until around 8 a.m. Monday. The weather service said the storm will cause hazardous driving conditions due to snow-covered roads and limited visibility but it’s likely road conditions will get even worse as the week continues and more winter weather arrives.

The Sunday night-Monday morning storm will also bring up to three inches of snow to the Idaho Falls, Rigby and Rexburg areas and could produce an inch or two of snow in higher elevation areas across the region.

The weather service said the big storm will hit Monday afternoon and continue dumping snow on east Idaho through Monday night.

The storm will drop up to four inches of snow on the Pocatello, Burley, American Falls, Aberdeen, Rupert, Heyburn and Fort Hall areas.

Up to eight inches of the white stuff could fall on the McCammon, Downey, Soda Springs, Lava Hot Springs, Montpelier, Preston, Malad and Oakley areas.

The Driggs, Victor, Island Park, Ashton and St. Anthony areas won’t get much of a break between the Sunday night-Monday morning storm and then the storm that will arrive Monday afternoon, and the combined snowfall total from both systems could be close to a foot in those communities.

Interestingly, the Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby and Dubois areas are only expected to receive an inch or two of snow from the Monday afternoon-evening storm.

The central Idaho mountains could see up to nine inches of snow from the Monday afternoon-evening storm, and most of the rest of Idaho and all surrounding states will be impacted by the storm as well.

The weather service is warning anyone who plans to travel this week to pay close attention to the weather forecast and to expect potentially hazardous conditions region-wide.
