Bird Flu

Taiwan authorities said samples from two more farms have tested positive for a highly contagious H5 strain of bird flu.

Over 10,000 ducks at the farms have been slaughtered.

The Council of Agriculture (COA) said highly pathogenic avian influenza was on the rise with the onset of cooler temperatures.

Tests have confirmed an outbreak at two more duck farms, the Council of Agriculture’s Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) said on Thursday.

So far in 2016, eight Taiwan farms have tested positive for highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza as of Thursday, BAPHIQ Deputy Director-General Shih Tai-hua said.

Among the 11 reports of possible infection that health authorities received this year, eight tested positive and one negative, while two results are pending.
