GRAZIERS in northwest Queensland rejoiced after recent rain briefly eased drought conditions but a new threat has swarmed the outback.
Plagues of locusts are now destroying new grass shoots which sprouted following the late December rains.
George and Heidi Bredden, who run Lakeview Station at Balfes Creek, about 40km west of Charters Towers, have been battling to kill the ravenous pests daily but feel they are losing the war.
“We had rain and the green shoots came out but now these buggers are wiping all that out,” Mr Bredden said.
“We got the spray units out and started attacking them but they just came through in waves. I went through one swarm that was about 4km long. We’ve killed so many of the buggers but there is no way you could estimate how many there are out here.”
Grazier Patrick Scharf said the population of locusts “exploded” soon after the monsoonal rain, with the pests now infesting most of his property.
