63,500 birds killed due to avian flu in Plateau state, Nigeria

Bird Flu

Some 63,500 poultry birds have been destroyed in four local government areas of Plateau state raising the number of birds affected by the latest outbreak of bird flu from 20,000 as reported last week.

The head of the Avian influenza control office at the ministry of agriculture, Dr. Ayuba Haruna told our correspondent on phone that “farmers are now more aware of the dangers and so they are reporting cases.”

Dr. Haruna said so far 19 farms have been sealed and depopulated in the four local government areas of Jos North, Jos South, Jos East and Bassa.

“We have encouraged farmers to report suspected cases and once reported we go there to seal the farm. Samples are then taken for tests and if confirmed, the farm will be depopulated,” he said.
