A FREAK thunderstorm has wreaked havoc on Geelong, leaving cars submerged in floodwaters and houses inundated.

More than double the month’s average rainfall of 31mm pelted Avalon in just one hour, with the day’s total reaching 72mm, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The bureau said the afternoon’s rainfall was “equivalent to a one-in-100-year event”.

SES crews rescued nine people from cars while emergency services had to help a 19-year-old woman who was trapped in her car after hitting a tree.

A man was reportedly struck by lightning and was taken to Geelong hospital with a burn to his elbow, and hundreds of employees were evacuated from Cotton On’s North Geelong head office due to flooding.

It is expected workers will not be able to return today, while the first day of school for children at Clairvaux Catholic School in Belmont has been postponed until Monday after the school was damaged.
