Massive Avalanche Kills At Least 5 In Canada

Avalanche Emergency Alert

At least five people have been killed after being buried in a “very large” avalanche in Canada.

According to rescuers, the snowmobilers had reportedly strayed into an off-limits skiing area near the hamlet of McBride in British Columbia.

A helicopter was dispatched to the area to assist and two search-and-rescue technicians were on the scene almost immediately because they were already in the area, police said.

Six other people were pulled alive from the snow

Karl Klassen from Avalanche Canada said the “very large, significant” avalanche appeared to have been human-triggered.

The non-profit group said the area had just received about 30 centimetres of fresh snow and conditions in the region were windy, which, combined with recent mild temperatures, created an unstable snowpack.

“A fairly significant weather event added rain and snow to the snowpack over the last few days followed by clearing and cooling today,” Mr Klassen said in a statement.

Barbara McLintock, a spokeswoman for the BC Coroners Service, said the site of the disaster “is not a resort” area.
