Mexican environmental authorities attributed the death of 118 sea turtles off the coast of the State of Oaxaca, in the southwest of the country to a parasite.
According to the environmental Prosecutor’s office, studies and analyses that were conducted to the turtles showed the presence of the trematode parasite espirorquido in all of them, which caused blood clots in small vessels of the brain (microtrombos).
“We know that produces neurological problems and causes that turtles present difficulties breathing not to lift the head, which leads to death by hypoxia (respiratory failure by bronco suction)”, according to a statement.
However, the authorities do not ruled out that other environmental factors have influenced the death of animals, such as changes in temperature and the concentration of nutrients that proliferation of parasites and bacteria.
