Parts of the UK woke up to an unexpected winter throwback on Saturday, as snow showers brought an abrupt end to a balmy April.
Images on social media showed up to a centimetre of snow across the West Midlands, parts of Wales, Durham, Lincolnshire, and as far south as Oxfordshire.
But snow-lovers were advised to quickly build their snowmen and women, with the April sun expected to shine through this afternoon.
Chris Page, from the Met Office, said the snow was “very patchy in nature” with “only a few bursts”.
“It is very isolated and really it is confined mainly to high ground – but where the showers linger for a time we could see snow showers down to lower levels,” he said.
“At this time of year the strength of the sun is quite strong so the snow is not really that likely to hang around.”
The snow brought with it a considerable drop in temperature, expected to last for the remainder of the weekend.
After 18C and sunshine earlier in the week, temperatures are not expected to top 8C in the north and 10C in the south.
The Met Office puts the weather change down to a a combination of northerly airflow and April showers.
