Millions of dead Molluscs found washed up on beaches, ‘a disaster’ in Los Lagos, Chile

President Michelle Bachelet declared disaster area on the coastal edge of the region of Los Lagos.
 
This after the presence of red tide was detected in l Large beaches as Cucao, Huentemó and Chanquín, on the island of Chiloe. The situation has caused thousands of machas appeared scattered in the area.
 
Red tide is a toxin that carry some types of microalgae that are eaten by shellfish, and cause poisoning in people who use them. It is in this context that has led to the prohibition on extraction and consumption of shellfish, causing serious damage to the fishermen in the area.
“I have decided to declare a disaster area today to the coastal area of the Region of Los Lagos. It will be the regional governor in charge of coordinating and implementing recovery programs , ” said Bachelet.
