Severe Thunderstorm Warning Alert

Heavy rain and strong winds battered on Monday the Australian state of Victoria. The resulting flood and loose trees damaged homes in the state as the SES received 150 calls from Geelong and Melbourne for assistance.

9 News reports that there are images of Monash University’s ceilings suffering from leaks and inundated roads at the Melbourne CBD. On Sunday, the weather bureau issued a severe weather warning for the entire state as it forecast winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour for the Alpine region, Gippsland and areas in Victoria’s north-east and west.

The state’s Bureau of Meteorology recorded 55 milllimetres of rainfall at Stawell in western Victoria, reports ABC. Senior forecaster Chris Godfred said the storm would begin to affect Melbourne from 11 am through the middle of the afternoon with showers and possible thunderstorms, leading to a severe warning current.

However, Godred adds, “The fact that Melbourne is going to be sheltered by the Great Dividing Range to the north will probably make that prospect lower … If we do get a thunderstorm during the next couple of hours, then you couldn’t rule out a high total … as the storm passes by.”

The bureau also placed a flood watch for northeast Victoria, including the Upper Murray, Mitta Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens and King Catchments and the Goulburn and Broken Basins. Alan Bailey, duty forecaster, says that while thunderstorms cleared this morning, it may redevelop over the central area in the late morning or early afternoon.
