“We cannot determine the causes, whether it’s a pathology or which has led to death, because the turtles are in a complete state of decomposition”, said the veterinarian of the Mazatlan Aquarium, jasmine Martinez.
The State Committee of strandings of marine mammals and turtles is formed by personnel of Profepa, Government of the State, camp UNAM-Fonatur, Onca explorations, Mazatlan Aquarium and Secretary of Social and human development, and it has as objective to determine the causes of this slaughter and bury the chelonians, said Raquel Briceño Dueñas, researcher of the UNAM.
“This is the first attention to the contingency of the strandings are logged, in some cases we can not draw samples because the turtles present state of putrefaction, which says more than six days of dead”, said.
In the case of two turtles that appeared dead in Nayarit, it was determined that it was by eating algae with high toxins, but in this case still cannot be what happened.
