Earl has been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as the system bears down on Belize, threatening flash floods and mud slides.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami reported Wednesday that top sustained winds reached 75 mph.
The outer bands are bringing heavy rain and flooding across the northern coastline of Honduras. Earl is expected to make landfall in Belize early Thursday.
Numerous Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued across the region with the likelihood of the Tropical Storm to strengthen to a Hurricane increases within the next 6 to 12 hours.
Further west in Belize, Guatemala and parts of the Yucatan, hurricane forecasters are expecting tropical storm force winds by Wednesday night. Hurricane force winds of 73 mph or greater will be possible by early Thursday morning.
Rainfall amounts could be anywhere from 8-12 inches causing flash flooding and mudslides.
In extreme circumstances, over 16 inches are possible in spots over at Belize and Mexico.
Earl will also bring in an expected storm surge of 4 to 6 feet along the coast of Belize and the eastern coastline of the Yucatan.
