A dramatic scene was seen on the beach of Salaverry District last Monday: more than one hundred seabirds known as Pikemen appeared dead on the shore, at the height of the second breakwater.
According to the President of the movement environmental Regional (SEA), Carlos Bocanegra García, the Pikemen were reportedly killed crashing into shallow water while attempting to hunt fish. “It is a hypothesis. Then let us remember that in the Huanchaco Spa appeared Monday a shoal of anchovies that approached the shore”, Bocanegra said.
He explained that the Pikemen would try them hunt in Salaverry. They are called Pikemen precisely because launch dives to catch its prey. “But as the specimens of anchovy were in shallow water, the birds crashed suffering injuries. A booby can be driven at full speed to a depth of 2 meters. IE gives a pique”, explained.
Bocanegra Garcia noted that some of the birds were without viscera and the soft part.
“That would be because there are many people that is consuming his flesh.” But that’s dangerous, because we don’t know if these individuals are healthy and their flesh may harm comma who,”he said.
