Heavy fog in parts of England and Wales is causing major travel headaches, with flight cancellations or delays affecting several airports.

Heathrow Airport advised passengers to check with their airlines because flights were being delayed or cancelled.

The national hub said there was heavy fog across Europe, and asked passengers not to go to the terminal if their flight had been cancelled.

Gatwick Airport said visibility could be as low as 50m, meaning delays were likely to affect both arrivals and departures.

The NOP website warned of “high delays” at both airports until 9pm.

Some 30 flights have been cancelled at Heathrow today, after 100 were cancelled yesterday.

A “severe” weather warning was issued by the Met Office, lasting into this afternoon – but meteorologists say the Met Office could issue another warning for this evening and overnight into Monday.

It said southern England and South Wales would be affected by reduced visibility, along with parts of the Midlands.

Sky News Weather Presenter Nazaneen Ghaffar said the conditions were likely to persist for a few days.

“The fog may linger in some areas for most of the day, and it is due to reform quite widely again through tonight,” she said.

“The first few days of (the coming) week look set to remain murky through the mornings as well.

“Then early indications suggest that towards the Christmas weekend, conditions could turn rather wet and windy – which could cause some problems for Christmas travel.”
