New explosion, ash plume to 20,000 ft at Bogoslof volcano, Aleutian Islands

Recording of AVO’s OKRE seismic station (on the northern flank of Okmok volcano approx. 50 km to the south of Bogoslof)
Another relatively large ash-producing explosive eruption occurred this morning (23:45 Dec 29 AKST local time / 08:45 Dec 30 UTC) from the volcano. The eruption was inferred from seismic data on nearby islands and seen in recent satellite images.

The resulting ash plume was estimated to reach around 20,000 ft (6 km) altitude and drifting NE. The Aviation Color Code was raised to RED.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory noted earlier that seismic activity started to increase from around 19:00 local time, indicating the onset of a new eruptive phase. As activity progressed, the signals “merged into a continuous tremor sequence indicative of a possible ash-producing eruption, as was seen with the eruption on December 21.” (AVO)
