Severe weather conditions that caused snowdrifts on motorways and various roads in eastern Bulgaria prompted authorities to urge motorists to avoid the Bourgas region on December 31.
The situation remained difficult in the districts of Bourgas, Varna, Shoumen and Dobrich, the Interior Ministry said.
Numerous people were trapped overnight on roads and there were crashes and collisions because of icy road conditions and large snowdrifts. A chain collision stranded hundreds of people on Trakiya Motorway.
Snowfalls were forecast to continue in Bourgas until about 5pm on December 31. In Varna, snow was expected until the early afternoon.
On Trakiya Motorway, in the direction of Bourgas, a detour was in effect at Zimnitsa junction, through the villages of Saransko, Voynika and Sredets.
Dozens of people who had been trapped on the roads had been evacuated, the ministry said.
The most serious situation was on the Karnobat – Aitos road. The Road Infrastructure Agency said that the situation had been complicated by drivers of heavy lorries failing to heed the ban against using the road.
People who had been evacuated from stranded cars were being housed in nearby towns and had been provided with snacks.
The Petoluchkata – Karnobat- Bourgas section of road was closed.
In the Shoumen region, the road between the town and Kaolinovo was closed.
Overnight, five people were evacuated after being stranded on the Novi Pazar – Pliska road.
There were temporary closures on the Varna-Durankulak, Dobrich- Albena, and Dobrich – Karapelit roads. More than 160 people who had sought assistance had been helped by rescue teams, the Interior Ministry said.
In the region of Varna, fire crews had responded to more than 60 calls. Close to 50 people had been evacuated. Dozens of cars, two vans and 15 heavy lorries had been pulled from snowdrifts.
Because of heavy snowfall, cars must have snow chains on their tyres and goods lorries may not travel with trailers and semi-trailers through the Rozhen, Pamporovo and Prevala passes and along the Gotse Delchev-Dospat-Teshel road.
Severe winter conditions were continuing in eastern Bulgaria, public broadcaster Bulgarian National Radio said on December 31, with rain in many places, snow and strong winds.
Part of Haskovo was left without electricity, as was the Bolyarovo residential area and many villages in the municipality, Bulgarian National Radio said on December 31. Energy distributor EVN said that the power cuts were caused by icing of wires and disruptions of cables. Emergency teams from the company were working to restore power.
Almost all of Pomorie municipality had no electricity. EVN teams were on site to restore supply.
Strong winds of up to 130km/h cause power cuts affecting more than 1000 households in Sliven. Many villages in the area were without power.
Close to the 30 towns in the Yambol region also had power cuts.
In the municipality of Tundzha, some villages had not had bread deliveries because roads had not yet been cleared.
Twenty villages in the Shoumen region had no electricity as a result of the severe winter conditions. Emergency teams from Energo Pro power distributor were working to restore electricity, reports from the area said.
