The Department of Agriculture of the Generalitat has ordered the slaughter of the animals belonging to two duck farms located in the municipality of Sant Gregori (Gironès) after confirming the presence of the avian influenza virus. The two farms, with 520 and 2,170 birds, are very close to the facility where the first case of bird flu was detected in Catalonia.
As the emergency plan for an outbreak of avian influenza provides, the Department of Agriculture has immobilized poultry farms located within a radius of three kilometers of these farms and has restricted movement of poultry farms within a radius of 10 kilometers. In these areas, the rearing of poultry in the open air is prohibited.
With these two new farms, there are already nine farms affected by the obligation to slaughter their animals since the last day 22 was made public the first case in a poultry facility. Two days earlier the death had been confirmed for the same reason of a stork found dead in the natural park of the Aiguamolls of the Empordà.
Since then, a total of 27,000 ducks have already been slaughtered in Catalonia. In France, where the H5N8 bird flu virus was detected at the end of November, more than 3 million ducks have already been cleared, which means 8% of the national production.
