In just under two years, 23,000 animals were found dead on the 700km stretch of beach between Laguna, in Santa Catarina, and Ubatuba, on the north coast of São Paulo. Another 2,500 were rescued in poor health conditions and collected for treatment.
This is shown by the University of Vale do Itajaí (Univale), which coordinates the project to monitor occurrences and the situation of marine fauna in the Santos Basin.
The main causes of deaths have been the ingestion of garbage and accidents with fishing nets, varying according to species. The biggest victims are the green turtles, the little fox (small migratory seabird), the porpoises and the gray dolphins.
