Just in the first hours of work, the commune of Santa Rosa took the northern basin of the Laguna Don Tomás 4,000 kilograms of dead fish. They were on the banks of the Bowl located behind the island of children, as had been reported in the last hours.
High temperatures together with lack of oxygen were, according to agreed province and municipality, responsible for the death of lots of fish in the northern basin of the lagoon. The movement of water between the bowl and the primary also impacted on the phenomenon.
According to the information provided by the Secretariat of water resources of La Pampa, there was a significant mortality of carp (Cyprinus carpio) and some silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis). The predominant hypothesis is that it was due to high temperatures of recent days and that the depth is very low in the bowl. These two factors were lack of oxygen in the water that led to the death of fishes of different sizes.
The phenomenon was repeated in other shallow bodies of the province, as in the case of a lagoon near the village of Alpachiri. There the mortality mainly affected the population of silverside.
For his part, Adalberto Fuhr, director of transportation and logistics of the municipality of Santa Rosa and also responsible for the administration of the Park Don Tomas, recalled that since last week, work flow management are being developed in the lagoon for drain water from the North bowls and Maldonado to the main Bowl in order to let them reserve capacity to any new torrential rains.
For the official, that management of bowls and high temperatures on Thursday and Friday of last week, they were the cause of that significant mortality of fish.
The staff of the santarrosena commune was in charge yesterday begin the tasks of collecting dead fish. According to the municipality, the task was performed jointly by staff and officials of the Department of environment, the Subdirectorate of green spaces, the Sub-Directorate of urban waste and maintenance of the park employees Don Tomas. “On the occasion, was collected in the first hours of work around 4,000 kilograms of fish, which was placed in garbage bags to take them to the Municipal landfill where it will be buried”, it was reported.
