170 dolphins have died due to cetacean morbillivirus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

An outbreak of ‘cetacean morbillivirus’ caused the death of dolphins in Sepetiba Bay, about 70 kilometers west of the city of Rio de Janeiro
 
This virus is the leading cause of death of about 170 dolphins in little more than 40 days on the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, scientific officials said on Thursday.
 
The school of Oceanography and the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro said in a statement that an outbreak of “cetacean morbillivirus” caused the death of dolphins in Sepetiba Bay, about 70 kilometers west of the city of Rio.
 
The virus attacks the immune system of cetaceans.
 
It is not known how the outbreak began or how long. Scientists look for other possible causes of the mortality of dolphins.
