The frost which occurred in the month of December and January, caused the death by freezing of 12 sea turtles on beaches of the municipality of Soto la Marina, site where rescued 320 copies to find them in lethargy caused by the intense cold.
The experience of the personnel that works in the marine turtle conservation programme, allowed to take measures to prevent the deaths of hundreds of these species, said Alejandro Garza Pena, Coordinator of parks and biodiversity in the State.
“Were 320 copies of turtle rescued, which were taken to the camp tortuguero from the village of La Pesca, where heated them and made germek safe until they improved weather conditions to be returned to the sea.”
When the sea water is very cold, tulle sea turtles and not be able to swim, float and the tide takes them to the beach, where they are picked by staff of this unit so that they recover.
He said that you occurred the death of 12 copies, which did not withstand Frost, but that it manages to rescue are saved from dying this way or be eaten by predators, such as dogs or Eagles.
In the first freeze of December 8 of last year, 200 turtles were rescued.
And in the second the first of January Frost, were other 120 tortoises which were found on the beach.
He said that staff of the Unit conducted tours in a stretch of 60 kilometres of beach, from the fishing village, to a place known as horse bar, which was where the dead turtles were found.
