Hundreds of dead fish wash up on a beach in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Fish Kill Alert
Hundreds of dead fish appeared on the coast of the town of Hudson in the province of Buenos Aires, in front of the Río de La Plata , for reasons that have not yet been established, although experts attribute the phenomenon to the high levels of water pollution.

A neighbor from Berazategui approached the riverbank and photographed hundreds of fish that were lifeless on the beaches and inland waters. Although there was no official report by the Provincial Organism for Sustainable Development (OPDS), there were two possible causes for speculation. The mortality of aquatic species could respond to a change in water temperature, a process that had already happened some time ago in Quilmes and Berazategui . The other reason could be an outcrop of algae, which produces a drastic reduction of oxygen levels in the water, which causes the death of the fish by “hypoxia”.

Apart from the unofficial hypothesis, the president of the Forum in Defense of the River Plate, Ernesto Salgado, associated this phenomenon, which “is repeated more and more frequently”, to the “high levels of water pollution”. “The Río de la Plata is among the 10 most polluted rivers in the world and is the most polluted in America. Both the temperature change and the outcrop of algae are produced by external agents. That is, pollution, “explained the specialist in dialogue with this medium. Finally, he warned that the river “has lost its capacity for self-purification for 10 years”, which is why water quality does not improve.
