Residents found last Friday (11) a dead green turtle on Ribeira Beach, in Ubatuba. From early 2017 until this month, more than 1,400 turtles were found dead on the north coast of São Paulo.

According to oceanographer Hugo Gallo, director of the Argonauta Institute for Coastal and Marine Conservation, only that year 380 turtles were found – 96 live and 284 dead. Last year, there were 302 live and 1,151 dead.

Garbage, he says, is the second leading cause of death for these animals, which they lose to bycatch – when they get caught in the nets and die from drowning.

The Argonauta Institute is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization, founded in July 1998 by the Ubatuba Aquarium Board. It was created with the intention of raising funds for conservation and research projects related to the preservation of coastal and marine environments.
