Some 122 sea turtles, most of a species in danger of extinction, were found dead on the beaches of Puerto Arista, in the southern state of Chiapas, while the causes of death are known, reported environmental authorities of Mexico.
10% of the dead specimens show evidence of that were beaten (wounds on the head and shell) and traces of hooks and nets, said a statement from several government agencies led by the Ministry of environment.
“Will has no reporting of the causes because that the necropsies and tissue analysis not performed due to the advanced state of decomposition in which specimens have been found,” according to the statement.
Of the specimens located on the beaches of Puerto Arista, 111 belong to the species olive Ridley, declared endangered.
The authorities pointed out that they intensify travels to combat the capture of turtles that lay eggs on the beaches of Chiapas.
In Mexico was declared a permanent ban on the capture of sea turtles in 1990, but remains an illegal egg trade, because they are part of the populated South Indian cuisine, that is popularly considered to have aphrodisiac properties.
Traffic products and by-products of sea turtles is punishable to nine years in prison.
