35 dead turtles and dead fish found on a beach in San Diego, Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan Army reported today that an undetermined number of fish and dozens of turtles were found dead in an “aquatic spot” off the coast of the Nicaraguan Pacific.

“An undetermined amount of dead fish and 35 dead sea turtles, of the Paslama species (Lepidochelys olivacea),” the Nicaraguan Army said in a statement.

The finding occurred last Friday, in front of San Diego beach, in the Pacific of Nicaragua, according to the military authorities. The animals were found dead inside a “brown water spot, about 4 nautical miles long with a width of 400 meters,” detailed the Nicaraguan Army.

Authorities of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Marena), and of the Nicaraguan Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Inpesca), investigate the causes of the mortality, according to the source.

So far the Nicaraguan authorities did not report possible reasons for the phenomenon, nor did they issue any kind of alert for the population.
