Thousands of fish die in Chacuey dam, Dominican Republic

Fish Kill Alert

The appearance of thousands of dead fish in a large portion of the Chacuey Dam, in the Sabana Larga community of this municipality, has aroused great concern among the inhabitants of this town and surrounding areas.

The large amount of the species called “carps”, which was found dead in the waters of that dam, has generated uneasiness for dozens of people who live off the fishing activity in that area.

The fishermen do not come out of amazement, because only the so-called species was affected.

What does seem to be clear is that it is some kind of poisoning, and some of the fishermen presume that it could be originated by products used for the fumigation of banana plantations in farms located in the area of influence of the dam.

The deaths of thousands of units of tents extends from the Los Cercadillos Zone, to the place known as El Muro.

The fishermen demanded that the authorities of the Department of Hunting and Fishing of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as the Ministry of the Environment, order an investigation and the necessary measures to prevent the fish from dying.
