Thirty-six turtles were found dead in the southern region of Bahia, between the beginning of January and this Tuesday (19). The animals were located in a coastal strip corresponding to about 217 km, which goes from the municipality of Maraú to Canavieiras.
According to veterinarian Wellington Laudando, who is part of the A-Mar project, the main cause of death is drowning asphyxiation, related to man’s predatory action. To minimize cases, the extension of the area is monitored by project biologists, who carry out actions to prevent and promote environmental awareness.
“We estimate that more than 70 percent of tortoise deaths in southern Bahia have a connection to fishing,” said Wellington. Most of these tortoises are caught in fishing nets left by fishermen on the high seas.
Many turtles also end up trapped in ghost nets, which are the remains of materials used to make nets, discarded at sea by fishermen. “There is also the question of industrial fishing, which ends the lives of many turtles,” added the biologist.
