50 TONS of #fish have died in #PiquiriRiver, #Brazil

Fish Kill Alert

The Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP) has for an indefinite period banned fishing in the Piquiri River Basin, which cuts off parts of the northwest, west, central and southern Paraná.

The ordinance was published in the Official State Gazette on Friday (22). The measure is valid for the entire length of the Piquiri River and tributaries.

According to the IAP, the prohibition of any type of fishing – except the scientific one – was due to the death of approximately 50 tons of fish since the beginning of February.

According to Tassiano Cesar Freire Maranhão, regional head of the IAP in Toledo in the west of the state, the main suspect is that due to the increase of amateur fishermen in the last 10 years grains with agrochemicals could be used to fish .
