Alvaro Vargas, director of the Environmental Public Establishment (Epa), said that the high temperatures, low oxygen and pollution are the factors that are influencing the mass deaths of fish that these days have been recorded in several internal bodies of water of Cartagena .
The official said that the fingerlings, particularly shad , are the type of fish that have been found floating in large quantities in the Juan Angola pipe , one of the most important internal bodies of water in the city.
Vargas explained that when these small fish are dragged by the cold currents, they enter waters where the ambient temperature is above what they can stand , a fact that ends up causing a failure in their organism and their subsequent death due to not having the capacity to adapt to the environment.
“They are school that are entered by the cold currents, but when they reach this type of water that is practically still and that is hot , contamination and oxygen is what is causing the mortality,” he said.
Although the causes of the mortality have been identified, Vargas said that with the support of Cardique, samples have been taken to the waters where they have appeared, in order to know the levels of contamination that appear in the tributaries.
