Thousands of small fish appeared dead on Tuesday in two pipes in the municipality of Tolú ( Sucre ) in the Gulf of Morrosquillo .
Fishermen made known the situation after a tour of the Pichilín and Guainí streams .
In the latter, they found thousands of bass, anchovy and other anchovies that are typical of the area, the fishermen said.
The death toll is registered in the Guainí stream, according to Julian Medina , leader of the fishermen , as a consequence of the contamination by sewage and the lack of flow and counterflow during the summer.
“At this time of year, the mouths of streams and pipes are naturally closed, but there is a phenomenon, and that is that both the Guaimí and the Pichilín streams are draining sewage . Then that contaminated water, when stagnating with the high temperatures causes that the oxygen is lost and when losing the water oxygen, logically there is going to be fish mortality, explained Medina.
The fisherman said that the death toll occurred on Tuesday February 26 in the Guainí stream, but it is believed that it will also happen in the next few hours in the Pichilín , where dead species such as crab (marine crab) were found.
Finally he assured that this situation had already been alerted by them, through the organization Salvemos Arroyo Pichilín , but only until this Tuesday when the death toll occurred when the Mayor sent a backhoe to open the mouths of the two streams and thus allow the flow and counterflow of the waters, from and to the sea.
