Facebook has confirmed that one of its workers in Seattle has been diagnosed with COVID-19, the first confirmed infection within the company.
To handle the risks posed to other employees the company has closed its offices, forbidding anybody to enter until the end of the week – with some staff set to work from home until the end of the month.
There have now been 159 confirmed infections as part of the coronavirus outbreak in the US, with 11 deaths confirmed.
According to the company the contractor was last in the office on 21 February and employees were alerted on Wednesday night that the Seattle office would be closed until 9 March.
In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed: “A contractor based in our Stadium East office has been diagnosed with the COVID-19.
“We’ve notified our employees and are following the advice of public health officials to prioritize everyone’s health and safety.”
The were 95,000 confirmed cases on COVID-19, the strain of coronavirus that started in China, as of Thursday.
