Forty two more people have been diagnosed with coronavirus in the UK in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 206.

The number includes five more infections in Scotland, taking the total number of cases there to 16.

Earlier on Saturday, the UK’s deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries told Sky News that the country “has planned for pandemic flu for many, many years”.

She added: “It’s important at any time of year, particularly in winter, that if you have elderly relatives and are particularly unwell yourselves, you should avoid visiting them.”

The government has been urging people to refrain from stockpiling – amid reports that some supermarkets are running out of toilet roll, painkillers and certain non-perishable goods.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock stressed that the government is “working to makes sure that if people are self-isolating, they will be able to get the food and supplies that they need”.

Two people have died in the UK after contracting COVID-19.

They are a man aged in his 80s who passed away at Milton Keynes Hospital and a woman in her 70s who lost her life in hospital in Reading, Berkshire. They were both thought to have had underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, two British Airways staff, believed to be baggage handlers, tested positive for coronavirus on Friday and are recovering at home in isolation.
