Richard Challoner School in New Malden, Kingston , has closed for the remainder of the week after a pupil showed symptoms of coronavirus.

A letter sent to parents by headmaster Sean Maher said that the student had attended school on Wednesday (March 11) but soon reported to the medical room “displaying symptoms of COVID-19”.

He was immediately isolated and sent home, while other students were told of the closure after the lunch break and also sent home.

Mr Maher’s letter said the pupil had recently “returned from a period of self-isolation as he had been in contact with someone who had tested positive over the half-term break”.

It added: “Therefore, we are taking the precautionary measure of closing the school for the remainder of this week.

“A deep clean will be conducted across the whole school site whilst we await the outcome of the affected student’s test result and further advice from Public Health England.”

The headmaster said that any student concerned about leaving early was instructed to speak to their form tutors, with arrangements made to supervise them until 3.20pm.

Work will be set for pupils to complete during the closure and parents can contact 111 if they have any concerns.

They should also keep the school informed if their child displays any symptoms of the virus.

Mr Maher added: “Whilst we understand that many of you may have further concerns or questions, we would ask that you do not contact the school office unless it is absolutely necessary. They will not be able to provide any further information at this time.”

Richard Challoner is the third school in Kingston to temporarily close as a precaution against coronavirus.
