Plane Crash Alert

A small plane crashed and burned in a parking lot near Van Nuys Airport on Friday, killing two people aboard while barely missing parked cars in a narrow space between industrial buildings.

The plane went down shortly after 3 p.m. on Hayvenhurst Avenue just west of the airport, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

It didn’t hit any buildings, the department said. Nobody on the ground was hurt but the plane damaged three cars.

The crash site is just off of a runway.

Televised news reports showed firefighters hosing down the blackened wreckage in the middle of the lot, between some parked cars only feet away. One piece of wreckage appeared to have landed in the back of a pickup truck.

The single-engine Navion B had left Van Nuys Airport and was heading to Santa Ynez Airport in Santa Barbara County when it went down, according to Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Santa Ynez is next to the Chumash Casino Resort, about 100 miles from Van Nuys.

There was no immediate word on what caused the crash.
