Thousands of fish belonging to karamba farmers in the Kedung Ombo Reservoir (WKO) Ngasinan area, Ngargotirto Village, Sumberlawang District, Sragen were reported to have died suddenly.

Thousands of fish died as a result of the upwelling phenomenon or the reversal of water mass in the reservoir, thereby lifting the remaining toxic feed from the bottom of the water which resulted in killing the fish.

Data compiled by JOGLOSEMAR NEWS.COM , the mass fish deaths occurred in the last three days. The upwelling phenomenon has hit cages in the Ngasinan Hamlet area with a capacity of 50-100 tons of dead fish.

“There has been an upwelling for several days. The fish that died belonged to several farmers, the symptoms were the fish died suddenly. Estimates that the dead are around 50 tons, “said Head of Ngargotirto Village, Sumadi to JOGLOSEMAR NEWS.COM , Sunday (2/8/2020).

He explained that to prevent the spread of the upwelling outbreak, the farmers who owned the cages around the point of death immediately took the initiative to shift the cages.

This was done to save the fish in order to avoid the white poison that arises from upwelling.

“This is an annual cycle and usually occurs during the transition season. Yesterday, farmers immediately moved the cages away so they wouldn’t be hit, “he said.

Head of the Livestock and Fisheries Service (Disnakkan) Sragen, Muh Djazairi confirmed this. He admitted that he had received reports from fishery extension officers in the Sumberlawang area regarding the upwelling phenomenon in Ngasinan.

“The provisional reports of the number of fish deaths between 50-100 tons. The point of death in the Ngasinan area. But the reports we received, most of the affected people belonged to entrepreneurs, “he explained.
