Fish Kill Alert

Residents were left baffled when a school of fish weighing over half a tonne was found dead in a pond.

Witnesses said the area was fumed with a strong foul smell as thousands of fish left floating in the water for at least a day.

The incident happened in the neighbourhood of Chebeiyong in Guangzhou, south-east China’s Guangdong province on July 16.

Video taken by the locals shows the dead fish scattering in different areas of the pond.

Some of them are pushed to the corner by the slow-moving stream of water.

Local authorities confirmed the gruesome incident and launched a clean-up operation to take the fish out of water and place them in plastic bags.

Cleaners were spotted stacking dozens of bags by the pond as they filled it with dead fish and it weighed about 500kg [0.5 tonne].

One resident said he also saw some green algae-like patches floating in the water where approximately thousands of dead fish bobbed up.

An investigation is underway and the officials said the fishes death may be explained by the warm weather.

They will look into the possibility of an illegal waste discharge into the water.
